Students Debate Over a Sanctuary Campus for Immigrants
Majority of students are in support of helping undocumented students
President Donald Trump’s immigration plan has caused much discussion among students at the University of Maryland, College Park.
A sanctuary campus is a campus where undocumented immigrants are protected under official laws that the university imposes. President Trump’s new immigration plan requires much stricter enforcement of the deportation of undocumented immigrants.
“The purpose of a sanctuary campus is to protect those people that are not getting protected by the government,” said sophomore Memo Sahin.
Overall, students at the University of Maryland agree that most of the student body would like the campus to be a sanctuary for undocumented students.
“I believe that we are at a point in life where equality should not even be questioned. There have been such incredible strides in history to get where we are today so we shouldn’t back track,” said sophomore Alexandra Vinick in response to Trump’s immigration plan.
The University of Maryland has committed to protecting undocumented students, but has not officially declared the university a sanctuary. The Student Government Association has promised to try to formally make the university a sanctuary campus in order to have an inclusive and safe environment for all.
“We kind of already are a sanctuary campus without the label, so I don’t see why we shouldn’t just formally declare ourselves a sanctuary campus,” said junior Jenni Jones.
While the majority of students seem to be more liberal in their beliefs, this does not mean that every student wants the campus to become a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants at the university.
“I mean yes and no. No because I feel like undocumented people, even if they have a good intention, should still try to come into this country legally. There are people who worked hard to get visas to come here and it’s not fair if they just come here, but with that being said, I feel that those who are already here can stay here,” said sophomore Shehan Weeraman in regards to the campus becoming a sanctuary.
There was a unanimous opinion among students that the majority of people on the University of Maryland’s campus would want the campus to be a sanctuary. Additionally, all of the students were well-aware of the new immigration plan that Trump has imposed.
“We must come together in this time when undocumented students on our campus are being threatened,” said sophomore Josh Pickens. “I am proud to go to a university that has vowed to protect undocumented students that have made it to this school.”
